SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM (PARISH-BASED)
St Declan's Parish Penshurst runs a parish based Sacramental program which is very successful. The parents’ involvement in the preparation lessons of each of the sacraments of Reconciliation, Communion and Confirmation proves to be an opportunity to walk together with their children on their spiritual journey. The preparation lessons are presented by the Sacramental Team (comprising of priests and laity). The positive feedback we have had from parents in the past has indicated that we should follow this format.
Many parents feel inadequate when it comes to teaching their children about their religion. It is important to remember however, that children do not need to have a detailed knowledge of the Sacraments. They simply need to have an appreciation of such concepts as sorrow, forgiveness, belonging, reverence and love. By attending the classes together you have the opportunity to answer questions your children may ask, which may help to bond your faith relationship closer. Teachers and catechists will also reinforce our sacramental program in the schools, as usual.
Some parents may be thinking; “The children are learning about their faith at school. Why do I now have to teach them myself?” In response to this question it is important to remember the statement from the Second Vatican Council that parents are “the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith”. We at St Declan’s parish believe that it is a privilege to be able to help one’s children to deepen their faith and to assist them to develop Christian values for their lives.
There is a Parents Information Evening at which the parents/guardians get to meet the Sacramental Team and learn more about what is involved in each program. This is then followed by a number of gatherings within a three to four week period depending on the Sacrament. We must stress however, the importance of at least one parent/guardian being at all of the gatherings with their child.
Enrolment forms for each of the Sacraments will be available two weeks prior to the Information Evening, from the Parish Office and on this website. The forms must be completed and returned to the Parish Office at the required date.
Welcome to the preparation for the Sacrament of Holy Communion. From 1st April enrolment forms for children to receive this Sacrament for the first time will be available from this page, the parish office or the church (on weekends). The form must be completed and submitted before the INFORMATION EVENING on Tuesday 7th May.
Please note that the children must be in Year 3 or older and have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation to receive this Sacrament of Holy Communion.
Please return the completed forms to the locked letterbox at the footpath entrance to the Parish Office. For any enquiries, please email email@example.com
Congratulations to the young children of our parish who celebrated their First Reconciliation on Friday 16th November. May they see the beauty of God's love and forgiveness through the love their of their family and friends.
Congratulations to the 92 young men and women who were confirmed by Bishop Richard Umbers on the 22nd & 23rd of September. May they become more aware of the gifts of the Holy Spirit within them and nurture these gifts to produce an abundance of fruits in their lives.
